평택에서 진행된 두 프로젝트는 모두 걷기에서 시작되었다. 지역을 직접 걷고, 보고, 듣고, 때로는 멈춰 서며 장소를 온몸으로 받아들였다. 변화는 자본 중심의 개발에서 시작되었고, 그 속에서 지역과 사람들의 정착과 소외가 무수히 교차되었다. 빠르거나 느리게 변해가는 도시의 흐름 속에서, 나는 낯설지만 익숙한 풍경을 이방인의 시선으로 마주하며, 내 감정을 지도에 담아 드로잉했다.

Both projects in Pyeongtaek began with walking.
I walked through the area, saw, heard, and at times paused to fully absorb the place with my body.
The changes started with capital-driven development, and within that, the settlement and alienation of the region and its people intertwined countless times.
Amid the rapidly or slowly changing flow of the city, I faced the unfamiliar yet familiar landscape through the eyes of an outsider,
and captured my emotions on a map through drawing.

미군 부대의 대대적인 움직임과 평택시 일부지역의 대규모 재개발 과정 속에서, 자본과 경제, 정치적 흐름이 사람들의 삶과 지역의 모습을 어떻게 바꾸는지 관찰했다.
거대 권력과 거대 자본의 이동은 지역 사회 내 경제적 차이를 강조했고, 부동산과 인구 변화, 자원의 분배에서 다양한 이슈들이 발생했다. 
이 작업은 단순히 지역을 묘사하는 것이 아니라, 경제적 변동 속에서 인간들이 겪는 아이러니한 상황과 그 속에서 피어나는 씁쓸한 유머에 주목했다.

Through the large-scale movement of U.S. military forces and the extensive redevelopment process in certain areas of Pyeongtaek, I observed how capital, economic, and political flows reshape people's lives and the character of the region. The movement of massive power and capital highlighted the economic disparities within the local community, and various issues arose from changes in real estate, population, and resource distribution. This work does not merely depict the region, but focuses on the ironic situations people face amid economic changes and the bitter humor that arises within them

약 870만 평에 이르는 세계최대 규모의 반도체 생산라인이 있는 고덕면은 초고속 개발되어 고덕동, 고덕 신도시가 되었다. 크고 작은 공장과 논과 밭이 많았던 이 곳은 초고층 아파트가 들어서고 초고속열차 SRT가 개통되었다. 반도체 공장을 중심으로 수많은 내외국인이 일자리를 찾아 대이동하였다.  개발지역과 멀어 조용하고 자연경관이 좋은 곳은 미군들의 사설 주택이 들어서있다. 

Goduk-myeon, home to the world's largest semiconductor production line covering approximately 128,900 square meters, has undergone rapid development, transforming into Goduk-dong and Goduk New Town. What was once an area with numerous large and small factories, rice paddies, and farmlands is now filled with high-rise apartment buildings and the newly established high-speed SRT train system. Around the semiconductor factories, a large number of domestic and foreign workers moved in search of jobs. Far from the development zones, quiet areas with beautiful natural landscapes have become home to private residences for U.S. military personnel.

안정리는 미군부대 캠프 험프리가 있는 곳이다. 부대를 중심으로 몇 블럭은 미국문화 중심의 상업지구가 발달했지만 얼마 지나지 않아 고즈넉한 논과 밭, 한국의 전형적인 시골풍경이 펼쳐진다. 한옥을 개조한 미국식 주택은 이질적인 풍경을 보인다. 미군을 상대로 진행한 주택렌탈 사업이 대거 실패하며 비어있는 집들이 흔하게 보인다. 

Anjeong-ri is home to the U.S. military base Camp Humphreys. Around the base, a few blocks have developed into a commercial district centered around American culture. However, just beyond that, the area quickly transitions into quiet rice paddies, fields, and typical rural landscapes of Korea. American-style houses converted from traditional Korean hanok create a contrasting and foreign landscape. After a large-scale failure of the housing rental business targeting U.S. soldiers, empty houses have become a common sight.

오산 AB는 평택시 송탄 신장 1동에 위치한 미국 공군기지이다. 송탄보다 근처 오산이 발음하기 쉬웠던 미군들은 오산 AB라고 부대이름을 지정했다. 한국사람보다 미국사람 보기가 더 쉬운 이곳은 유흥부터, 음식, 작은 소품샵까지 거의 모든게 미국식이며 당연하게도 주요 고객층이 미군이다. 한국사람이 좀 처럼 쇼핑할 것이 없는 송탄관광특구 쇼핑로는 송프란시스코라는 괴상한 이름이 붙어있다. 정작 한국사람들이 모여 사는 골목은 발달하지 않은 채 8,90년대 모습을 보이는 곳도 많다. 

Osan AB is a U.S. Air Force base located in Shinjang 1-dong, Songtan, Pyeongtaek. The U.S. military, finding it easier to pronounce "Osan" instead of "Songtan," named the base Osan AB. In this area, it is easier to see Americans than Koreans, and everything, from entertainment to food and small souvenir shops, is almost entirely American-style, with the main clientele being U.S. military personnel. The nearby Songtan Tourism Special Zone shopping street, where Koreans rarely shop, is oddly named "Song Francisco." Meanwhile, the alleys where Koreans live remain underdeveloped, with many still resembling the look of the '80s and '90s.

반면 평택에는 오랫동안 정착해 살고 있는 다양한 아시아 민족이 있다. 안산의 원곡동보다는 규모가 작지만 도곡리와 안중리에는 파키스탄, 우즈베키스탄 등 중앙아시아 국가들과 중국인, 고려인, 조선족, 그리고 여러 아시아 국가 사람들이 터전을 잡고 살고 있다. 이들은 가족을 이루고 자녀를 낳아 한국 학교에 보낸다. 조부모, 부모, 자식의 역사와 문화는 각각 다르지만, 핏줄만큼은 같다. 이방인인 이들은 소외된 듯 보이지만 전통과 민족성을 잃지 않으며 존재를 증명하고 있다. 저녁에는 일과를 마친 이들이 삼삼오오 모여 맥주를 마시거나 기도하거나 수다를 떤다.그 곳에서 나는 되려 이방인이 되었다.

On the other hand, in Pyeongtaek, there are various Asian ethnic groups that have settled and lived for a long time. Although smaller in scale than Wongok-dong in Ansan, in Dogok-ri and Anjung-ri, people from countries like Pakistan, Uzbekistan, and other Central Asian nations, as well as Chinese, Koreans from China (Joseonjok), and people from various Asian countries have made their homes here. They form families, have children, and send them to Korean schools. The history and culture of their grandparents, parents, and children are different, but their bloodline remains the same. These outsiders may seem marginalized, yet they prove their existence without losing their traditions and ethnic identity. In the evenings, after finishing their work, they gather in small groups to drink beer, pray, or chat. In that place, I have become the outsider.
